In today’s world, the term ‘computer’ refers largely to an umbrella category, which is used to group together all manner of different electrical and technological products which give us access to information, data and the internet – from huge factory computer systems to office desktops, personal laptops, mobile devices and even bike computers which are fitted to bicycles and provide information around speed, distance and location. However the one thing about the industry which has never changed is the basic function of a computer: to take the input provided by the user, and to provide some form of output – be it information, data, a command or an action.
The rise of the personal computer and mobile computer was one of the big moves of the 2000’s – using batteries at first as a means of providing a portable computer device which provided the mechanical support and analytics on the go. By the early 2000’s, the idea of a computer being integrated into mobile phones had risen, with smartphones and tablets now running on a variety of different systems in order to provide the complete experience of using a computer but without the sheer size of a hefty device.

One of the main driving forces in the computer industry has always been the sheet volume of possibilities afford by computer technology – with various devices and products now available in line with different user demands: for example the gaming industry, the work place and office user, large factories and even children. All of these different demographics and user types require different things from their computers, and so retailer and manufacturers alike have developed a multitude of different ranges suitable for different end users.

Another trend in the computer industry is one intrinsically linked with the development of technology – namely Artificial Intelligence and the use of computer systems in bringing technology solutions into our homes, workspaces and community areas.
