AO

What is AO?

Now a titan of e-retail, AO began in a pub in Bolton in 2000. A man named John Roberts was bet £1 by his friend that he couldn’t start his own white goods company and disrupt the market. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Roberts launched Appliance Online. AO now brings in over £1 million profit a year, so it’s safe to say that Roberts won that bet.

Roberts began by not only selling direct to customers but also selling kitchen appliances on behalf of companies like Next, House of Fraser, and B&Q. They quickly gained a reputation, and were quickly on their way to becoming a household name.

AO’s first big achievement came in 2009, when they acquired the company Expert Logistics. From that point onwards, they had full control of their operation from end to end. No more logistics issues impacting customer service.

From then on, the sky was the limit for AO. In 2013, they officially rebranded from Appliance Online to AO. To celebrate this, they launched their first TV advert with a reworded version of Blitzkrieg Bop by The Ramones.

That same year, AO won three awards at the 2013 Retail Week and Drapers ceremony. They won the Overall Award for Excellence, Best use of Social Media (by 2013, AO had accrued 1 million likes on Facebook), and Best Pure Play Etailer. AO also took 4th place in The Times 100 Best Mid-Size Companies to work for.

Come February 2014, and AO was first floated on the London Stock Exchange, as AO World. AO’s stock market fortunes raised funds for its expansion into continental Europe. It began with the launch of its German site: AO.de. Later on that year, AO swept the 2014 Retail Week Awards, taking home the awards for Best Customer Experience, Best Use of Social Media, and Best Use of Content.

This success continued into 2015, with the launch of the Netherlands based AO.nl, and the completion of a Germany to Bolton bike ride. AO employees completed the cross continental bike ride to raise money for a new playground in the same town as the AO Germany building. Come awards season, AO took home the prestigious Employer of the Year Award at Retail Week 2015.

In 2016, Bergenheim, Germany became the site for the official AO Europe headquarters, reigniting a growth in German business for AO that continues to this day.

2017 was a big year for AO. They extended their sponsorship of Lancashire Cricket Club, and also became the sponsor for Season 11 of Britain’s Got Talent, raising their public profile to a level it hadn’t quite been previously. This was the year that John Roberts stepped down as CEO, and COO Steve Caunce stepped into the CEO role. Roberts remained with AO as a board member.

2019 proved to be a mammoth year for AO. In August, AO.nl closed, as the German branch was doing exceptionally well, and AO wanted to focus its energy there. In November, AO Finance was launched in partnership with British credit provider NewDay to allow for easier payments and to spread the cost of their orders. Also in 2019, Steve Caunce vacated the CEO role, with John Roberts returning to the role of AO CEO.

Business did not slow much in 2020 despite the circumstances, and in September 2020 AO officially became the headline sponsor for the Manchester Arena.

What payment options does AO accept?

AO accepts all major credit and debit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, Maestro and American Express.

Sometimes we may not want to use our cards online. If that’s the case, AO also accepts PayPal for a safe and secure internet transaction.

Need to spread the cost of your order? AO has you covered with AO Finance. AO Finance has multiple plans, which you can use to pay for your order in the way that’s most effective for you.

Buy Now Pay Later: With this plan, you make your purchase on the day, and will have either 6 or 12 months to pay back the full amount (the promotional period depends on which option is available to you). If you pay the full amount within the given time, no interest will be charged, although that may change if you go over the agreed time period. This option is only available on items £200 and over.

Flexible Credit: With Flexible Credit, all you need to do is pay back a contractual monthly amount, or more if you can afford to. It works similarly to a credit card. There is no fixed time limit to pay off the total amount, but Flexible Credit does accrue interest the longer the payments go on. The exact amount of interest can vary, and is subject to an assessment, so it’s best to take a look at the figures being offered to you.

Instalment Plans: An instalment plan allows you to clear your payments faster than a Flexible Credit plan may allow. Only available on items worth £200 or more, you can choose whether you would like to pay the balance and any interest over 12, 24, 36, or 48 months. The amount that you will have to pay each month is unique to each purchase and decided by AO Finance’s facilitator, NewDay.

0% Interest Instalment Plans: Exactly as it sounds, a 0% Interest Instalment Plan allows you to pay the monthly amount for your order without any interest accruing. This option is only for products worth £200 or more, although on rare occasions it may be offered on items less than £200. 0% Interest Instalment Plans are promotional, and so are not offered all year round, so take a look at the checkout to see if this is available for your order.

As you can see, AO gives you plenty of payment options, so you can pick the method that’s right for you, whether it’s PayPal, Finance or the more traditional card payment. Whichever option you go with, don’t forget to use your AO Discount Code for sweet savings.

With Click and Collect, you may have the option to select a date to collect your order. If not, your order will be ready to collect within 3 days of placing your order. Drop Shop Service: AO has partnered with a number of shop chains like ASDA and Tesco, as well as CollectPlus to allow for easy drop off of smaller items. All you need to do is initiate a return via My Account on AO’s website, a returns label will be emailed to you. From there, just print off your returns label, pop it on your parcel and drop it off to your closest applicable location.

Collection Service: AO offers a collection service for items that are either too big to be returned via Drop Shop Service. This service is completely free, just initiate your return via My Account, select your preferred collection date and wait for AO to collect your return.

AO will email you once your return has been received. From the date of receipt, please allow 14 days for your return to be processed, and your refund to appear in your bank account.

Exchanges: AO does offer exchanges on a vast number of its products. Exchanges can be issued either via the Customer Services Live Chat, or on the My Account page. Not all items are eligible for exchange. Certain TV & entertainment items, for example, alongside computers, smart tech, gardening, and DIY products cannot be exchanged once bought. If in doubt, consult the Live Chat to see if your item is eligible for exchange. If it’s ineligible, fear not, you can still return your item for a refund, and reorder your preferred item instead.

Faulty Items: On rare occasions, an item from AO might be faulty. If you do receive one of these items, just report the fault via My Account. AO will then contact you to resolve the issue, or to issue a replacement if the fault cannot be fixed.

Using an AO Discount Code will not affect your eligibility for a return, refund, or exchange.

Does AO offer a student discount?

AO does not currently offer a student discount, although the AO Voucher Codes above should mitigate that.
