After almost four decades as one of Britain’s premier amusement parks, Alton Towers continues to provide a fun packed and exciting adventure day out for all the family. Alongside its reputation as a fantastic theme park, the Alton Towers resort is also built around a real-life grade listed I stately home with a rich history that dates back over 200 years, and is the former seat of the Talbot family and the Earl of Shrewsbury.
Opening officially as a theme park in 1980, Alton Towers was the brainchild of John Broome, who wanted to create a British theme park to rival the likes of Disneyland and other big-name theme parks from around the world. Now part of the Merlin group of entertainments, Alton Towers is the biggest theme park of its kind in the UK, and now has over 40 different rides and 10 nail-biting roller coasters. Alton Towers has also opened its own hotel resort, where families can enjoy short breaks at the various themed hotels on offer.
The park is easy to navigate and is divided into the main Theme Park, CBeebies Land and Waterpark. There is also the Roller Coaster Restaurant for a lunchtime break from all the fun, plus the Alton Towers Spa and Golf course for grown-ups. The main theme park is divided into the following areas –
Each area has its own unique set of rides built around the relevant land’s theme. Some rides do have height restrictions, while others have set rules as to whether an adult must ride along too with a child or not. All rides are categorised as either suitable for younger children, or more of a laughs and frights attraction, so it is easy to know which rides to jump on and which to avoid. CBeebies Land has been specially designed for younger children to enjoy, and features the Go Jetters Vroomster Zoom ride, live shows and even its own CBeebies Land hotel.
With so many rides and attractions to choose from, it can be hard to decide where to start first! Here are some of the top attractions and rides on offer at the park that you simply must not miss –
Throughout the year, Alton Towers runs lots of seasonal events that make this theme park even more of a must visit. Here are just a couple of events to take a look at –
If you are looking for a short break with a difference, then why not try staying in one of the Alton Towers resort hotels. The Alton Towers Hotel combines a classical hotel set-up with fun and exciting themed bedrooms and quirky dining experiences. Built around the fictional explorer, Sir Algernon, there is a giant flying ship in the middle of the foyer, and that is just the start! Enjoy drinks in the Dragon’s Bar and stop for a bite in the amazing Secret Garden Restaurant. Rooms on offer include the Explorer Room, based around the travels of Sir Algernon, plus the Arctic Explorer Room themed around his mountain expedition. The Moon Voyage Room takes you to another world where you can zoom through the stars, whilst the Gangsta Granny Room is a fun and interactive place to stay based around the character created by children’s author and comic, David Walliams. All stays at the Alton Towers Hotel include a full English breakfast buffet, evening entertainment, access to the 9-hole onsite golf course, early entry to the theme park itself and free car parking too.
If you prefer something a little quieter, there is also the option to stay in one of the Fairytale Woodland Lodges, which are situated in the Enchanted Village. Here you can enjoy a relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the theme park, with rooms that are designed to be snug and cosy, with all the woodland themed furnishing you would expect. Ideal for all the family, a stay at one of the Fairytale Woodland Lodges also includes a full English breakfast buffet, evening entertainment, access to the 9-hole onsite golf course, early entry to the theme park itself and free car parking too.
